the JSW program helped them succeed.
ENGINEERING Electrical Engineer Upon arrival in Canada, an internationally trained Electrical Engineer with strong experience in "production planning" gave himself "3 months" to find work in his field.
After completing the Job Search Workshop program in Toronto, the client took to heart the information about labour market research, networking and cold calling, because he focused most of his time and energy doing these. He wasted no time in researching companies that would be able to use someone with his qualifications and experience, created a list of possible employers to contact, and then followed up with each one. (Perhaps because of his "planning" background, he was highly organized in how he conducted his job search, keeping relevant papers and information together with him, using a daily/weekly agenda to mark appointments, etc.). In addition, he exhibited a positive and professional attitude with those he came in contact with while job searching.
His efforts were rewarded because in less than 2 months, he informed the JSW Facilitator that he had not one, but TWO job offers, both in his field and both with large and successful companies. He is presently working full-time for one of these companies and is already planning his next steps to work his way up the career ladder!
This client attended the JSW at Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office.
CAD Technician I decided to relocate from Toronto after my JSW last July 2004. I’m now here in Calgary working as a CAD Technician, at the Information Management Division, of a group of consulting companies, specializing in ground engineering and environmental.
It’s my pleasure to share my job search experience here in Canada to help newcomers who are particularly doing information interviews and Labour Market Research for employment opportunities.
I did some research on opportunities this city has to offer and the chances of employment where my skills experience will be put to use. Mind you, it was not easy. When I decided to relocate to Calgary from Toronto, had a feeling I’ll make it here technically. I’ve learned that there are more opportunities here in Alberta due to expansion and boom of oil projects. Calgary is not a huge city compared to Toronto, which means that competition is not as tough as I experienced back there in Toronto.
For me, finding a decent job here in Canada is a lot of work. It’s both challenging and exciting. It’s very important that one has firm resolve and faith in ones capabilities. Now, life for me and my family here in Calgary is great. I recall with pleasure how I worked my way in finding a career related to my background and interest. But I’m not stopping here and now. I know there’s still a lot more for me to do career wise. I have yet to secure my license as an engineer.
Thanks to many people I networked with in Toronto. More power to the Job Search Workshop.
Engineering-Related Job I am a new immigrant to Canada. Back home I was a Civil Engineer. Hoping my experience there would count, I applied for many engineering jobs. But I soon realized the difficulties in finding even an entry-level job without Canadian background. Meanwhile, one of my friends informed me about the existence and services provided by the Tamil Eelam Society of Canada (TESOC). Here, with the assistance of the JSW Facilitator, I updated my resume and, again through her, I got an engineering-related job, even without facing big interview, within forty days of my arrival.(The client is working at Innovative Detailing Services Inc.)
I find my new job satisfactory and commensurate with my education, and I hope it would further lead me in the career path.
I am very much thankful to TESOC and the JSW staff for their effort given the difficulties faced by new immigrants in finding suitable jobs. While appreciating their service, I wish TESOC success in its efforts to integrate newcomers into Canadian society. This client attended the JSW at Tamil Eelam Society of Canada. |
